John E. Simpson, Jr.

 

John E. Simpson, Jr. was born in 1923 in Moultrie, Georgia. He attended Georgia Southwest College in Americus, Georgia after serving in the United States Army in the Pacific. In 1948, he married Jim Mae Swann and began a 38-year career with Lance, Inc., a national snack food company.

He retired in 1986 as district sales manager in Houston, Texas. He and Jimmie moved to Lubbock in 1988. Also known as 'Big' or 'Big Daddy,' Johnny joined Splawn Simpson Pitts in 1991 where he assists with day-to-day administrative duties.

His outside activities include Sunday school treasurer for his class and 'emir' of his golf group, which convenes each Wednesday and Friday. Johnny and Jimmie have two children, John Simpson, III of Lubbock and Dixie Simpson Cook of Frisco, and five grandchildren.

Gloria Martin

 

 

 

Gloria Martin, CLA , began her legal career at the receptionist's desk at Splawn Law Offices on May 1, 1971. She worked for Johnny Splawn through August 1972 and moved to Austin where she worked for Korioth & Collins for a short time. She moved back to Lubbock and returned to work at Splawn Law Offices in February of 1974. (John Simpson was the law clerk at that time.)

She became a member of the Legal Assistants Division of the State Bar of Texas in 1986 and served as Director of District 6 from 1990 to 1992. She was awarded the 'Exceptional Pro Bono Service Award' for the year 2002-2003. Gloria became a member of the National Association of Legal Assistants in 1975 and attained Certified Legal Assistant designation in 1986. She is an active charter member of West Texas Association of Legal Assistants and served as president 1985-1986, 1986-1988, 1993-1994, and 1997-1998.

The organization honored her as Legal Assistant of the Year in 1994 and voted a life membership for her in 1997. Since 1991, she has served as lay member of the Pro Bono Advisory Committee, Lubbock County Bar Association, and received the Civil Clinic Lay Advocate Volunteer Award in 1991. Gloria served on the Texas Tech University, Department of Continuing Education, Certified Legal Assistant Program Advisory Board from 1991 to 1995 and is a past president of Lubbock Legal Secretaries Association.

MaryAnn (Fellers) Scott

 

 

 

 

MaryAnn (Fellers) Scott came to work for Splawn Simpson Pitts in January 1993 as bookkeeper/comptroller. She had worked as a bookkeeper for several businesses in Lubbock prior to coming to Splawn Simpson Pitts. Her duties include the accounting and business management for the firm, gathering medical records and bills for personal injury cases. In January, 2006 she moved to the front desk and in addition to the business management also handles the front desk.

MaryAnn married Paul Scott in August, 2006. Paul is the General Sales Manager for Alderson Cadillac, BMW, Lexus, and Subaru Dealership.

Her son, Jason graduated from Texas Tech University in 2002 and works for City Bank, Lubbock. He is also a regular performer at the Cactus Theater and recently was invited to sing at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction of Roy Orbison in Cleveland, Ohio. His wife Kameron is completing her master’s degree in counseling at Texas Tech and will graduate in August, 2007. Her daughter, Lacye, graduated from Texas Tech in 2004 and is a patient liaison for Grace Clinic. She is married to Bradley Kalivoda who manages Fiesta Motors in Lubbock. Her new daughter, Carol Scott, has her master’s degree in counseling and is currently Associate Director, Student Disability Services at Texas Tech University.

MaryAnn and Paul enjoy football and basketball at Texas Tech and are avid Red Raider fans. They also enjoy traveling and spending time with their children.

Kelly Kennedy began working at Splawn-Simpson-Pitts on May 7, 2007.  She was hired as a law clerk, focusing on filing, billing and reorganizing.  She is a senior at Texas Tech University, interested in attending Texas Tech School of Law in the Fall of 2008.

Kelly's parents are Fr. Thomas Kennedy and Chyrel Kennedy.  Fr. Kennedy is an Episcopalian priest for three churches, residing in Henrietta, TX.  Mrs. Kennedy is a registered nurse, currently working at Kell West Regional Hospital in Wichita Falls, TX.  Kelly also has an older brother and sister.  Her brother, Ben, is attending Howard Payne University in Brownwood, TX, playing football and planning to graduate in December of 2007.  Her sister, Colleen, is a kindergarten teacher in the Hurst-Euless-Bedford I.S.D. and is married to Kevin Wallace, a manager in the Parts Department of Classic Hummer in Grapevine.  Kelly enjoys spending as much time with her family as possible.  She also enjoys time with her friends up here in Lubbock.  Kelly has two gorgeous huskies, Balto and Biloxi, that keep her company and make her exercise.

Lacey Actkinson

 

 

 

 

Lacey Actkinson began working at Splawn, Simpson and Pitts in October, 2006 as a part-time clerk. She graduated from Texas Tech in May, 2007 and moved to California for the summer. When she returns to West Texas, we hope she will be available to fill in as needed.


Her parents are Johnny and Diane Actkinson from Farwell, Texas.  Her career in clerking began at an early age because she worked for Aldridge, Aycock, Actkinson and Rutter in Farwell before she moved to Lubbock to attend Texas Tech University.  Here at Tech she is a senior and will graduate in May, 2007 with a Bachelors of Science in Human Development and Family Studies.  After undergrad she plans to obtain a Masters degree, and then pursue a career as a Child Life Specialist. 
Lacey enjoys many activities outside of the office.  She likes to spend her time with family and friends.  She is also involved in Pi Beta Phi sorority, Phi Upsilon Omicron and Omega Delta Kappa honor societies.  Lacey also enjoys attending sporting events, especially Texas Tech basketball and football games. 

Kay Cunningham

Kay Cunningham

Kay Cunningham began working for the firm as receptionist on July 1, 2001 and worked until she “retired” on December 31, 2005. She continues to “fill in” as receptionist when needed and when possible. She and her husband, Kirk, have been married for more than 30 years and have two sons. Sean is working on his Ph.D. in history at the University of Florida and Eric is a doctor of veterinary medicine practicing in Lubbock. Sean is married to Laura and Eric is married to Averi. Kay & Kirk love the mountains and traveling and Texas Tech sports.
